Dear Friends,
Today we begin the season of Advent, the time of preparation before we celebrate Christmas and the Incarnation. During this time the Church ‘re-reads and re-lives the great events of salvation history in the ‘today’ of her liturgy’ (Catechism 1095). The readings also speak about the coming of the Lord as judge at the end of time. This can seem to be scary! In fact it is the time when God will fulfil the ancient promises made to his people. Those promises were above all about salvation and peace. Even when Jesus gives a warning in the Gospel he ends it with an invitation for people to prepare themselves so that they may ‘stand with confidence before the Son of Man’. We must remember that the one who comes to judge has already come among us.
