Dear Friends
Today’s first reading is about the prophet Elijah who has given up all hope. But when angels provide food and drink he is able to continue his journey. There is here a link with the manna which God provided in the desert but also with Jesus who is himself the bread from heaven. The people had complained that they knew who Jesus was and where he came from – how could he have anything new to reveal to them? In fact his teaching is indeed new as he tells them of his true origin and his relationship with his Father. He does not reveal this to impress but to offer ‘life’ (a word often used in John’s Gospel): ‘everyone who believes this has eternal life’.
God bless
Father James
