Dear Friends,
In today’s Gospel Jesus consoles his disciples about his imminent departure. He promises to return to take them to himself so that they will be with him. We hear his words with our knowledge of what is about to happen and with our faith in the resurrection. But at this point, the disciples are just confused by his words and so the passage shows the disciples’ doubts.
One question, presented by Thomas, receives a response that may be one of the most well-known New Testament descriptions of Jesus, “I am the way, and the truth and the life.” The disciples want to know the route to the Father’s house and Jesus says, “I am the way.”
