“The Eucharist is truly a glimpse of heaven appearing on earth. It is a glorious ray of the heavenly Jerusalem which pierces the clouds of our history and lights up our journey.”
Today, we celebrate the solemn feast of Corpus Christi. It is three feasts in one: the feast of the Eucharistic sacrifice, the feast of the Sacrament of the Eucharist and the feast of the Real Prescence of Jesus. The readings for the Solemnity of the Body and Blood of Christ – Corpus Christi Year B – give background for the notion of sacrifice and explain why we call Jesus the Lamb of God. The first reading describes how the Israelites sacrificed animals to seal their covenant with God. The second reading explains Christ is our high priest, but that he also demonstrates sacrificial love. And in the gospel Jesus institutes the sacrament of the Eucharist during the Passover meal.
Corpus Christi celebrates the Eucharist. It is time to reflect on the gift of Jesus’ Body and Blood.
