Dear Friends,
The idea of being a chosen people implies that other nations are not chosen. This is commonly held in the Old Testament: the only exceptions are those who convert to Judaism. Today’s Gospel can come across as presenting a harsh Jesus. In fact the fierceness of his argument makes the point that such an exclusive view of the chosen people is now redundant. The issue is not about ethnicity but faith. We are familiar with the principle that the Gospel is for all people and this is reflected in the wide range of different cultures and ethnic origins even in our own congregations. It would be interesting to know how many nationalities are represented in our parish!
The re-decorating of the Sacred Heart church is nearly finished. Sunday Mass is celebrated in the parish hall today for the last time. It also looks as if we will be able to start using the church during the week once the scaffolding has been taken away. There will be Mass next Saturday and also Confessions in the church at the usual time.
